Coming along

Good evening friends. I write you on the eve of the last day of a great job. Alas tomorrow is my last day working at the Cleveland Clinic as I begin a new journey.

To be honest it has not been as easy as I thought it would be- leaving the security of such an institution when you have a family of 5 is hard enough- but when you love that institution as well and what it stands for and fights for it makes it even more difficult. I am proud to say that I have worked with the caregivers at Cleveland Clinic and have always worked hard to put patients first. It has been a pleasure to serve here!

BUT- I am excited for what is now in store- I am excited that Nexus is coming along nicely and we are still on schedule for our April 2 launch date.

Here are some exciting things going on:

- Our managers are all hired. There is of course myself- but we have also brought on Jason Hickerson as our "Event and Community Impact" manager (or some cool title like that!). Jason will be booking our many events in the venue portion as well as organizing our many volunteer projects as we literally love on Cleveland as much as we can.

Taking no back seat is Courtenay Roberts as our barista manager. I think everyone is going to be very impressed with her! She is one of the best people I have ever met! It doesn't hurt that she also has a deep passion for coffee and shares in my enthusiasm to be the best.... I can almost guarantee you that Nexus will lead the market in terms of our coffee. The menu is both pure and inventive- allowing the flavors of our coffees to shine beautifully!

- The space is coming along! I promise to share pictures soon but in short the skeleton walls of the venue space is up and will be drywalled within the next few days, cabinets are being built with reclaimed wood cut by Gateway volunteers as we speak, and the line for the fireplace is being run in the next few days. (allot more than that going on, but the rest would bore you!)

- Our website and press release are soon coming. Teams have been working tirelessly to get the content for the website done. We expect sometime within the next 10 days it will complete and the first phase will be complete. I will be sure to post on here when it is up so you can check out more info on myself, Courtenay, and Jason- see our coffee and food menu ideas- and get a taste of our vision and values. As soon as that is done we will start working phase two which will include hiring, some venue information, retail coffee, and other fun stuff.

- Speaking of Vision and Values- check out the values finally solidified by our teams. They've always been there- but it is cool to see when we actually get it on paper.

  • Excellence- the simple idea that everything we do will be done with excellence. If it won't be excellent we simply won't do it. This is true from cleanliness, to quality of product, our manner of business with employees and partners, to the relationships with our friends and guests.

  • Awareness- One of desires is that people be educated about what is going on around them. This involves education of coffee- how it is grown, who grows it, how it is best prepared. To our city- the needs, the opportunities. To our food chain- why buying locally is important- and more importantly becoming aware of WHO is raising our food products- on a personal level.

  • Service- Coming back to the selfless act of putting others first. This will shine through in our customer service, our service projects, and simply how we run our business.

  • Community- We are all in this together- none of us stands alone. We will seek to connect people to one another knowing that we can always do more as a team than as an individual.

In the end Nexus is exactly that- a nexus where these concepts collide into something that can change our city and our world. And let's be honest- doesn't your coffee taste better when you know all the profits are going strait towards this type of vision?

- Be ready for our press release- Equally exciting to the website is the fact that when it goes up we will also be doing a press release and finally getting signs in the window letting the city of Cleveland know they better get ready to be rocked!

- Our beans are almost here. Our beans are somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean right now- maybe even around to the Panama Canal as they work their way up to NYC. As exciting as that is it is even more exciting to hear the value our partnership is having in Sumatra. Through our partnership we have really been able to help and strengthen some good work over there. We are currently planning a trip for mid July where a small group can go over to help serve the community there. Please keep them in your prayers as good work rarely goes unpunished! (come one, we all know that's true!)

so much more to write- but you'll have to wait until later.......

I promise next time I'll throw up some pics.

New Beginnings

Good evening friends!

There is so much going on I doubt that I will even come close to capturing it all here! Yes, yes, it has been a very long time since I have written. Admittedly I am somewhat unapologetic as launching Nexus and still working full time has been quite a chore.

I want to start with what is the most exciting news I have had: Our beans are leaving Bengkulu as I type, heading to Jakarta, then boarding a ship towards the states. We expect see them sometime in mid February.

While that is exciting on its own the really exciting thing to hear is the impact that our partnership is already starting to have. Through this partnership indigenous leaders are being trained and empowered to make a difference in their own villages. The financial impact is helping our partners, Nexus, but most importantly it is providing a solid base for the farmers in the villages.

To be honest I am completely overwhelmed with joy, it has left me speechless and near tears. I am thankful to be part of this fine journey. It amazes me to think this is only the beginning.

On the Nexus side we are progressing nicely.

We have hired one of our managers and the man who will be heading the Cleveland, I Love You campaign: Jason Hickerson. He and his wife will be moving here in the coming weeks to lead the way in serving our city, organizing volunteerism, and building partnerships. All that and he will also be running Nexus event space as we seek to have some of the best community functions and entertainment in Cleveland.

Here is an artist rendering of the event space concept:

Among other exciting items: We are meeting with local farmers this week, interviewing potential barista managers, and moving forward with construction. Demolition has been virtually completed and we are basically just waiting on approval from the city.

Our teams are plugging away in areas of technology, marketing, and human resources. It has been awesome to see what great talent we have in our community.

The new logo has been completed as well. Expect to see some signage in the space in the coming weeks as well as a formal press release soon.

I'll try to post more as it happens.

Nexus is go

I will give no excuse to why I have not written in here in a while other to say that I was not about to have anyone other those who absolutely must join me on the roller coaster of a ride that this journey has been. It was rough on everyone as we would get so close only to end up back at square one at multiple points. I had resolved to only communicate things as absolutely needed and avoid unneccessarily building anything up.

I write this today in wierd combination of celebreration, humility, thankfulness, and even fear as I share that Nexus Cafe and Coffeehouse is expected to open its doors April 2, 2012 at 627 Prospect Ave in downtown Cleveland. This past Friday Alex signed a 10 year lease with two 5 year options.

I am overwhlemed by God's faithfulness. I feel a very similar feeling to that which I felt when I first came to Christ- complete unworthiness. I am overwhlemed by God's grace and the trust He puts in me to leaf forward in His name through this tool. The fear I discussed earlier stems from this as the sense of resonsibility that is within me is sobering.

So here is a quick explanation of what is to come next:

- There is construction to be done to be ready the space. We are working with the landlord, architect, and contractor this week to begin the work as soon as possible. We expect that construction will be complete and Gateway will begin meeting in the space as early as Feb 1, 2012.

- Teams are being assembled to help in the launch process. If you have a skillset or passion in the areas of finance, restaurant operations, marketing, facilities management, technology, or human resources and want to help get us prepared email me at mickey@gatewaycleveland.com

- I leave for Sumatra November 10 to meet the farmers we intend on getting our coffee beans from. We will work on the many logistics that must be in place but also get to know them and their needs as this is only the beginning of a long relationship with these farmers and others in their area. It is our expectation that we will form a relationship with them and open avenues for us to express God's love for them in deed and word.

Please pray!

With Nexus and this trip to Sumatra the exciting part is not the food or coffee. Let's be honest- another restaurnt in Cleveland is not exciting, it happens all the time. More coffee in the states has no cool quality in and of itself, coffee is shipped in every day. In both of these the exciting part is the life change that can happen. This is about people seeing God through a new lens- maybe seeing God for the first time ever. I believe in a God that is alive and well today- He is relevant, creative, and maybe even entrepeneurial in His ways. I have the privildge to share this God with people that have never been introduced to God in this way. This is what is exciting and this is what makes it all worth it.

Now that we are moving I promise to post more- at least weekly- and share everything going on. I will include pics and all sorts of fun stuff along the way.

We Import Beans and Export Hope

While the blog has been quiet the goings on for Nexus has not. It's been about as exciting of a 60 day span as one can remember since the journey began.

While there is nothing on a space as of yet we are continuing to keep our eyes and ears out for anything that may pop up.

Fundraising also continues- we are getting closer by the day to our estimated amount needed for launch- so continued support in all forms is also appreciated in this area.

But really the exciting part is what is going on with our beans! As we've shared- it has always been our vision to import our beans from works going on overseas that are similar to ours in that they are utilizing the business of growing and selling beans as a catalyst to be part of positive change within a certain people group. We greatly value indigenous work that is entrepreneurial, self sustaining, and naturally reproduces itself. When those type of ingredients are paired with leaders that have a heart for God and a heart to see people become everything they can be great things can happen. We happened to meet one such man.

Just a few weeks ago Andy joined Gateway church to share with our church, business leaders, pastors, and medical professionals the work he is doing in Sumatra. That's right Sumatra- where some of the best coffee in the world derives from!

What I liked about Andy is, like me, he is not as much as a "religious leader" as much as he is a normal dude that wanted to use his talents and passions to impact the world. You see Andy has an agriculture degree and now lives in Sumatra and teaches the people in his region farming techniques to yield better product and higher volumes, with greater efficiency. So he and his family along with a few other couples run a farm and travel around their region training these things and providing other valuable services. By giving this knowledge to these people he allows them a better chance of a decent life- to have shoes on their kids feet, an education, maybe even a bike to ride. Simply put Andy is able to use farming to import hope into families- by sharing the farming knowledge and investing into them and sharing the awesomeness of our God that is evident in Jesus Christ.

While there is still a hefty amount of logistical work to be done here is the direction we seem to be heading:

Within the next few months we are going to bring in a sample order of beans from Andy's region of Sumatra to ensure they are the best possible quality. We are excited about this because this part of Sumatra exports only a very small (if any) amount of Arabica bean since that region fancies mainly Robusta. This allows us to be on the forefront of offering coffee from this region taking advantage of the subtle differences that set these beans apart. Once that is finalized we will bring in our first full shipment as early as this year.

This fall Gateway and Nexus will be making a trip our to Sumatra and work with Andy as we form relationships with farmers. As we identify these farmers we will be honing in on those people groups that have the greatest need for our type of partnership- aka the worst off. We want to go where we can make the biggest difference- where it is not easy, but it's worth it.

The beauty of this is: The coffee you drink directly supports these farmers. This isn't just fair trade- this is a face with your joe. Every time we sip a cup of coffee we can do so knowing it allowed a kid we know, and have their picture in our cafe, to go to school, or even have breakfast. More than that- it means you can drink your coffee today in Cleveland and then join us in a trip to Sumatra and help better these farmers, their friends, family, and countrymen in a variety of other ways tomorrow. And since we cannot be there all the time- we have our partner Andy who is. We have the joy of providing them an opportunity at a better life and get to help them be difference makers doing the same for others in their area.

So the with this partnership, and hopefully many more to follow, the cycle of life giving entrepreneurship continues. As we run a business to impact our region there is a symbiotic relationship in Sumatra that is doing the same. To me it really is a beautiful thing and I am ecstatic that we did not open our doors without it in place!

I leave you with this: Maybe, just maybe we will be selling our coffee before our doors even open. You just might be able to start supporting Nexus and our partners in Sumatra this year. Nexus beans just might be available for home use- are you ready!!?!

Beginnings- New and Old

Since the decision has been made to import our own beans and work towards roasting our own I have totally immersed myself into the coffee bean world. The balance of culinary arts, connecting with new people groups, and entrepreneurial social work that is a natural to this side of the business has spiked all of my passions and flooded me with dreams of what could be. But there is much foundation to be built. The motto at the moment is to start small and dream big. Start with how much we can do with excellence and add on as we can- purposefully and strategically.

Within this new beginning I am educating myself on the history and generallities of the coffee bean business. It has been awesome as I learn where/how coffee originated and the affects it had on cultures as it was adopted into their daily routines. It is amazing how coffee seems to have naturally done many of the same things we hope to do through Nexus. I wanted to share a few of the quotes from one of the books I am reading:

"The coffee in your cup is an immediate, tangible connection with the rural poor in some of the most destitute parts of the planet. It is a physical link across space and cultures from one end of the human experience to the other". -Gregory Dicum and Nina Luttinger

I love this point because this tangible connection they speak of in the bean is the exact one we hope to build in Nexus- indeed that is even the meaning of Nexus- a point or means of connection. So to think that we are both connecting with Clevelanders, and through our beans are connecting (and working with to better the lives of) some people of the greatest need on the planet makes my soul sing! And to know that through that we get to the be the medium that connects these two points together is even more exciting! And to take it even further- to introduce all these to the Father that made and loves us all is truly spectacular! The picture of a diverse family all working together for the benefit of each other and all of mankind gives me goosebumps! And to read that others believe coffee has been doing this from the beginning, at least in part- spectacular!

"One of the most interesting facts in the history of the coffee drink is that wherever is has been introduced it has spelled revolution. It has been the world's most radical drink in that its function has always been to make people think. And when people begin to think, they become dangerous to tyrants and to foes of liberty of thought and action."- William H Uker

That to me says it all- I need add no more and can only hope that we can facilitate the same.

As I travel down this path of new beginnings (isn't each day that really?) I am humbly reminded of an older beginning. It amazes me how moments in one's life can drastically alter one's direction. It is a simple story, but cool one.

I had been caring for a little church in Middleburg Heights- loving the people, but knowing my time there was growing short as God was moving me towards a new journey. I had already shared the dream of planting a church out of a coffee shop- and was starting to share that vision with friends and really gaining momentum in my life for a new and authentic mode of community, worship, and service.

One Sunday I shared the pulpit with this dude that worked with our association of churches. Afterward we met for lunch and I shared with him my passions and what I saw in the future, but trying to figure out a path to make that happen. The next day another pastor had a meeting with him and one of the questions this dude posed to the pastor was "What's next for your church?" The pastor's response was basically "To open a coffee house, but we don't have anyone in our church that has that skillset". Within a day or so I received an e-mail from that pastor simply stating we needed to talk.

Now I had never met that pastor, I'm not even sure I knew his name, but that night we talked on the phone for about an hour and half to two hours. He told me about his church, his family, and just a bunch of miscellaneous stuff (all with a screaming baby in the background, I felt horrible for him). I remember thinking to myself- "What is the point of this call? What does this dude want? Man can this guy talk!" We had talked for an hour or more with these quesion going through my head- because to this point there was no lead to why he had contacted me. I loved to hear what was happening in the church he led, but I kept waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop.

Finally Alex told me he felt the next step for Gateway was to open a coffeehouse. I remember stating with both relief and excitement (you can only guess at the purposes my imagination had drummed up for that call in the previous hour +) "Oh, that's what this is all about!!!". We met within the week and the rest is history!

It's been a wild journey, and I love that Alex and I have been doing it together. We don't always agree, and we can be drastically different stylistically- but we are bound together by a greater purpose and Person- and truth be told our differences make us each stronger! I am constistantly amazed at how two visionaries can work together when their purpose trumps their agenda.

One of many cool stories- I promise to share more back stories and new developments as they happen!

As one final note- thanks to those who gave this past week in my first attempt to begin raising my salary. It means allot to me that I have friends and family that are prepared to invest into this!

Blessings to all!

Yummy!

So much going on with Nexus right now- especially in the world of the beans as I began to share in an earlier post. In the next few days I will share some of the cool partnerships that are beginning to form and maybe even let you in on when you might be able to meet one of them! Such cool stuff it is absolutely ridiculous!

We are also beginning new partnerships within the city- we're working hard to make it easier for people to find ways to serve the city they love in manners that fit their talents and passions. So keep an eye out for that as well!

But for the moment I want to wet your appetite. When we first came up with Nexus one of the first things I worked through was a potential menu. I thought I would share that as well as some other ideas that popped up since. This is by no means a finished product as so many other factors will go into the menu- most notably the availability of local produce, meats, dairy, etc. (we have some killer cheese farmers- look out Melt!). And then there is seasonality as we seek to offer ingredients that fir the season we're in (who doesn't love pumpkin and cider in the fall!)

Coffee Beans

What an exciting week, and it's only Tuesday!!!

Thus far in the Nexus journey we have focused heavily on what it is going to take to open the doors, how we are going to serve Cleveland, the food we are going to offer (it's going to be great!)- but the last couple of days we have begun to really focus in on an area that has not been the center of attention for some time: our coffee beans.

From day 1 we had said that we wanted to not only make a difference in our own community but also be partnered with suppliers that are doing the same in theirs. In terms of coffee we wanted to have beans that were excellent in flavor- but even more excellent in their redemptive qualities in terms of what that business is doing to serve the people of the region.

This week we have decided we are going to take a proactive role in finding those growers- and the results from only a few days has been overwhelming. We are hearing of a church in the middle of Istanbul Turkey that began from the migrant workers that are part of the coffee bean trade. One of my favorites has been Bolaven Farms that uses coffee beans to give hope to people, and reproduces that hope! My prayer is that we can be part of those types of works throughout the world. And where it may not be the case- where injustice still reigns- maybe, just maybe we can learn from our partners and bring justice and redemption there simply through love and growing coffee.

How cool will it be when Nexus is open that we send a team to one of our own partners to help with a work. To work along side of the same people that provided us our morning joe just a week before. How cool will it be when we realize we are all in it together?!?!

So keep us in prayer- this week has opened a whole new world of possibilities- and as with the rest of Nexus has a TON of planning and preparation that is needed to do it with excellence. As with all great works that God calls us to it is humbling, exciting, scary, and overwhelming all at once.
